USCIS published the Form I-9 Federal Register notice announcing a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification on Jan. 31, 2020. This new version contains minor changes to the form and its instructions.

Beginning May 1, 2020, all employers will be required to use the new version of Form I-9 for all new hires or for reverification. After April 30, 2020, employers who fail to use the new Form I-9 may be subject to fines and penalties under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Also due to precautions being implemented by employers and employees related to physical proximity associated with COVID-19, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it will exercise discretion to defer the physical presence requirements associated with Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) under Section 274A of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

With government audits and penalties for non-compliance on the rise, proper management of the Form I-9 process is essential. Learn best practices directly from the Department of Homeland Security in our free webinar on 7th May, 2020 at 2.00 PM EST 11.00 AM PST.
