ICE Agents Inspect I-9 Forms at D.C. Restaurants
On May 6, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted unannounced visits to several Washington, D.C., restaurants, including Chef Geoff’s, owned by Geoff Tracy, husband of CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell. Agents requested to inspect I-9 employment verification forms but made no arrests during these visits.
On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, around 10:30 a.m., nearly a dozen law enforcement and immigration officials wearing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) uniforms entered Chef Geoff’s Restaurant on New Mexico Avenue in Northwest Washington, D.C.
The agents requested to inspect the staff’s I-9 employment verification forms, which are used to confirm employees’ legal authorization to work in the United States. The visit lasted approximately 90 minutes, and no arrests were made during the inspection.
These events underscore the critical importance of maintaining accurate and compliant employment records. The I-9 form is a key document used to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired in the United States. Employers are legally required to ensure these forms are properly completed and retained.
The unexpected nature of the ICE visits highlights the need for organizations to be prepared for potential audits or inspections at any time. Implementing robust compliance programs, conducting regular internal audits, and providing training to HR personnel can help mitigate risks associated with such enforcement actions.
